Wings for the Children

Hooters Restaurants in the Chicago area just announced it raised over $31,000 for the Holy Family Lutheran School during its Wings For The Children campaign in February.  Hooters has held the popular Wings for the Children campaign since 1992 in Chicago and has raised nearly half a million dollars.  Hooters donated money from wing sales on Tuesdays in February with the money going to the Holy Family’s “Tuition Assistance Fund.”

The Holy Family Lutheran School, established over twenty years ago, means to provide a high-quality education for minority students in Chicago’s low-income neighborhoods.  87% of Holy Family alumni graduated from private and select college-prep high schools between 1990 and 2004.

“We are pleased again to report another success with the Wings For The Children campaign at our 11 Chicago area Hooters  Our customers responded again by visiting Hooters on Tuesdays to enjoy our world famous chicken wings and at the same time help the Holy Family Lutheran School”, commented Hooters Chief Operating Officer Sal Melilli.

“As the graduates go on to become enlightened members of the community, those of us at Hooters are extremely proud of our involvement and are honored to be able to actively improve the lives of children in our neighborhood,” added Melilli.

The Wings for the Children program originated in Clearwater, Florida, where the money raised benefited school grant programs.  The program was very successful in the Tampa Bay area and Hooters was presented with the Patron of Education award from the State of Florida.  Several of the founders of the Hooters Restaurant chain were originally from Illinois, and Iowa, and when they opened in Chicago in October of 1991, it seemed natural to move Wings for the Children to the Midwest.
